As I sit here in Starbucks, having ordered my skinny cappuccino and muffin, the first thing i do is check-in on Foursquare and Yelp. This is a couple of minutes of my life that I will not get back, so I ask myself, why do I do this? Do I just want people to know where I am? By sharing my check-ins on Facebook and Twitter, is this my way of trying to get people to interact with me? Am I simply embracing my human instinct to share information with others? Or is it the gamification aspect that is feeding my competitive nature to get points and ultimately become the mayor/duchess?
Share the social love
One aspect of social media that has always intrigued me is its relationship with online dating and the opportunities it holds. How can social media assist people searching for that special someone? Or can it hinder the process?
We all know of dating sites such as match.com and eharmony, but what about just using social networks such as Facebook and Twitter to meet people? Is it possible to approach someone using these platforms without coming across as a bit creepy or stalkerish?
Is social media making us antisocial?
Last night I watched a TV programme on BBC three called Websex: What’s the harm which was investigating ‘how the internet is changing the sex lives of 16-24 year-olds’, interviewing young people who rely on social networking sites, mobile technology and webcams.
One of the first young people to be interviewed was a 19 year old male who had quite worrying speech, as in he sounded pretty stupid and his sentence structure was very poor. In addition, his views on using the internet to find girls were pretty shocking. Continue reading
Are you a victim of social overshare?
Why do we use social media? To share knowledge and information with friends, family and acquaintances. But is there a limit to how much we should share and what we share. Obviously some people do not think so! So how do we know what is the appropriate amount? Or am I contradicting myself as I have said many times that social media is largely about freedom of speech?
How much is too much? Well if you’re hungry, eating a whole cake is too much, but a slice may be very enjoyable and satisfying. So how does this translate online.
Facebook waz ere
Tomorrow is my birthday, so as I prepare to turn one year older I think I am entitled to an old lady moan. So what is the fuel for this rant? Incorrect grammar and spelling on social media (oh and by the way, I’m turning 25 and not 85 as it may sound).
So, are social media partly to blame for the increase of the incorrect use of ‘there’ instead of ‘they’re’ or ‘their’ and ‘to’ instead of ‘too’? Or are people just becoming lazy?
Here come the snowmen!
We are yet to have a proper snowfall in Edinburgh and are getting set for a bizarrely warm Christmas. However, when the snow finally does appear, I will be first out there making my snowman. Here are some for us all to aspire to…
First off, a little xmas kiss from a squirrel! The poor creature is going to be heartbroken when that melts!
Probably the best Christmas trees in the world!
Five days until Christmas, so let’s celebrate with some awesome Christmas trees. But first, here is how a Christmas tree should NOT look…
So let’s look at how it should be done! First off a Lego xmas tree this year in London! Even the baubles were lego and had some QR code cubes hanging from the tree! Continue reading
RIP email?
My thoughts today are about email and the continuous debate about its suggested demise due to social media.
Email is ubiquitous, but so is social media, isn’t it? We are becoming increasingly surrounded by Facebook ‘Like’ buttons and integration into many aspects of our lives, changing the way we view and share content online, and maybe even how we shop online in the near future. Email has to be one of the greatest inventions to date. Yes we moan when it goes down, but we are also happy when an email we shouldn’t have or wish we hadn’t sent either gets lost on its way or ends up in the recipient’s junk folder (phew). Facebook is growing up
Where has Facebook poke gone? Or more to the point, who noticed or cares?
Facebook haven’t eradicated this feature altogether, they have just decided to hide it, hopefully with the view to phase it out. Is this a case of Facebook growing up? Or just realising what a meaningless feature it was.
Facebook is constantly growing and developing, with the introduction of more recent features such as Facebook shopping, Mark Zuckerberg shows he really means business. It is part of many of our every day lives and I can only see this increasing.
We wish you a social Christmas
I admit, I am a geek deep down. But I am also a Christmas geek so here is a run down of my top social media related xmas gifts. From great stocking fillers to more expensive bespoke gifts, there is something for everyone. For some this Christmas post may be a bit early, but remember it is now LESS than four weeks until the big day, so get shopping!
I am starting the countdown with this simple iPad stand which doubles up as a (small) desk tidy. Maybe you could use it for your afternoon coffee money, keys or chewing gum. Either way it seems like a good invention.
